Barna's New Numbers
Written by John
Monday, 14 May 2012

The Barna Group took on a new study.  They’ve long been researching the important role of parents as the spiritual nurturers (or not) of teens and children.  Back in 1999 they dropped this surprising statistic: When teens were asked who has "a lot of influence" over their lives, parents came in at 78 percent.  Friends was the next closest at 51 percent. As for church pastors and priests, 27 percent.  This study was long before the large world of youth ministry was serious about supporting parents as a part of youth ministry.  A lot has changed since 1999 in that area.

For the new study (May 2012), The Barna Group raised the question “Do youth leaders make a point of showing teenagers how healthy families function?”  From an online survey to 508 Protestant youth pastors and youth workers, 42 percent said that “exposing students to healthy families is important, but not part of your strategy.”  Another 46 percent said that “exposing students to healthy families is a major or a minor part of your strategy.”

Help for Parenting Emerging Adults
Written by John
Friday, 16 March 2012

According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center (2012), 31 percent of parents say that young adults shouldn’t have to be on their own until age 25 or older. In a 1993 Newsweek study, 80 percent of parents thought their kids should be out on their own at the age of 22.  The trend of 20something adults still living at home is definitely trending up and will continue to do so.  Some parents even expect their children to live at home into their early 30s.

Where in this spectrum do you fall, parent?
