On what may be a lonely day of year or widows, I helped our teens make homemade valentines for the widows in our church family. It helped that Valentine's Day is on a Sunday this year. For prep work, I purchased all the crafty items needed to give each teen mediums to work with to create their own creations. I had a lot of this in my own collection already. I also wrote up verses and other valentine verbage to help the teens who wouldn't know what to say but more so, to hopefully inspire the teens to dig deeper to find the right words to write. For the actual meeting, I started out with the verses in the Bible about widows and led a discussion on why we should be supportive of widows and older single ladies. I also added my personal perspective about what it is like to be a single woman such as losing a spouse, loss of income, difficulties in getting things done around the house and the sense of loss at holidays. And of course, how much these ladies appreciate a simple card showing that people care and have remembered them. Then I introduced the concept of Praying in Color . I wanted the teens to do more that just make the cards but to also pray over each widow using this creative way to pray. I handed out the materials I had gathered, the written words, the teens already had their Bibles, and we created some beautiful cards for the widows and older singles of our church family. I will post back stories of how these valentines were received by the widows.
